The Great Debate: 07 St. Raphael or 08 La Salle?: Wide Receivers and Tight Ends

Wide Receivers and Tight Ends:
07 St. Raphael: Jordan Monk was the bigtime threat outside of Dunbar in this offense. Blazing speed a phenomenal quickness got him 377 receiving yards and 5 TDs through the air. Considering the lack of passing in this offense, those are impressive numbers and his playmaking ability in this offense is uncomparable. Monk also added 370 rushing yards and 5 TDs. Nobody else on the roster had more than 100 receiving yards.
08 La Salle: The Rams did not have that one guy who could take it to theh ouse on any play, but they had two solid guys who had beter stats than Monk due to playing in a passing offense. Damon Divozzi and Brandon Gomes each had over 460 yards and a combined 5 TDs. Luke Francis also added 331 receiving yards and 3 TDs.

Advantage: 08 La Salle

Although Monk was the most electric player in the state, there was nobody else besides him. The La Salle Receiving corp had two guys with more yards than Monk and a third with over 300 yards, this is another easy choice.

Halfbacks and Fullbacks:

07 St. Raphael: Now, let’s be honest, you probably cannot name the starting running back from Saints’ 07 team. Stanley Dunbar basically played two positions for the team and was the teams main runner with bigtime playmaker Jordan Monk getting some quality carries. But the actual starter was Peter Micali. Micali rushed for only 203 yards and three TDs while fullback Dan Hayes ran for 274 yards and three touchdowns.
08 La Salle: The two teams seem like polar opposites in this category as La Salle had two all-staters in their backfield. Halfback Kendall Perry was the Lightning for the La Salle offense. rushing for over 1000 yards in 12 games, Perry scored 14 TD and averaged an eye-popping ten yards per carry. Fullback Gus Delfarno was extremely impressive as well, bruising his way to 742 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns. These two coupled with 450 rushing yards from Joe Charest made the La Salle running game a force.
Advantage: 08 La Salle
The Saints didn’t really have a need for a bigtime back, but the gap here is huge. Two All-State runners gives La Salle the obvious advantage. This is an easy decision.

The Great Debate: 07 St. Raphael or 08 La Salle?: Quarterbacks

There is no doubt that both the ’08 La Salle Rams and the ’07 St. Raphael Saints were the best teams in the state the past two years. But who would win a game between the two juggernauts? Here’s my call at the Quarterback Position:

Quarterbacks:
08 La Salle: 08 All-Stater Joe Charest was consistent and efficicient in La Salle’s spread offense throughout the whole season while throwing for 1700 yards and 14 touchdowns. Charest Also added 450 rushing yards and 11 rushing TDs.
07 St. Raphael: 07 All-Stater and Providence Journal Player of the Year STanley Dunbar was a force on offense. All though his passing numbers were not very good (just 411 yards, 5 TDs, 6 Ints.) opponents always had to be concerned with his running ability. It didn’t matter how many guys you put on him, he was gonna get his yards. Dunbar finished with 1400 yards rushing and averaged 130 yards per game.
Advantage: St. Raphael
Charest was excellent, but Dunbar did most of it on his own while Charest was surrounded by bigtime players at all positions. Dunbar was the kind of guy who could do it on his own if his teammates were being shut down, but if you shut down Charest’s weapons, he was shut down too
